About the Project
SafeSpace is an app that is designed to help educate others, create awareness, encourage action, and/or facilitate access to minority mental health care for the misunderstood, overlooked and underrepresented communities.
SafeSpace allows for people to talk about their mental health so they can break down stereotypes, improve relationships, aid recovery and away the stigma together.

USER INTERVIEWS
The purpose of this research was to uncover roadblocks that underrepresented communities experienced with mental health care resources. We performed user interviews with a mix of participants that wanted easier access to mental health resources.
There were no training and tools to build consciousness around context, history, and understanding surrounding mental illness.
There was difficulty in current mediums to form a community to support
other.
There weren’t programs to dispel stigma around mental health in minority populations.
Want accessible and affordable health care and resources.
Potential Solutions
After speaking with potential users we began sketching and brainstorming what the application could be.

Design Decisions
We decided to make a game like experience because we believed that it was the best way to reach and educate a wider audience. Through our user interviews we found that playing video games positively influences young people's emotional state, vitality, engagement, competence and self-acceptance.
Simplicity
Make sure that the primary users, children, are not overwhelmed with data.
Engaging icons
Made icons that were easily understandable for those who look at them
Color scheme
Allow for users to decorate their own SafeSpace how they see fit
Easy to discover resources
We made it easy for users to find resources for mental health in a clear and pleasurable fashion
Encourage daily login
Compel users to come back with activities such as daily journaling and breathing activities
Illustrations to reduce anxiety
We used illustrations to alleviate the nervous process of finding mental health resources
Build a community
Allow for users to connect, send messages, and thank each other for their kind words
Simple inbox
Show users when they receive mail and allow for easy navigation of letters
Anonymity
To protect our young users we decided to keep names of our users private when they send letters
